Coaching Success Story

Andreas Verbruggen and Louis van Tienhoven, founders of Bladesense, told us all about their company, interactions with their coach Mehmet Özkan and the lessons they got out of their coaching session.

What is it that Bladesense does?

Bladesense wants to automate and digitize inspection procedures of composite components. We are developing a sensor package for a robot which can detect defects that are not visual to the unaided eye inside composite material. Example of applications are the safety inspection of airplanes in the aerospace industry or the quality control at the production of these aircrafts.

What year did you start your startup and how did you come up with the idea?

Bladesense is a startup company that originally focused on the wind industry but has recently pivoted to the aerospace industry. They realized that their technology had even greater potential in the aerospace industry. And the founders have a study background in aerospace engineering, so this seemed like a better fit.

You got assigned a coach from our network, who is this?

Mehmet Özkan is a determined businessperson who has established multiple companies in various sectors including tourism, consumer goods, logistics, and aviation. He has experience managing operations in different countries. He possesses expertise in areas such as business strategy development, process improvement, logistics, and finance.

How did the first conversation go?

Beforehand we had to send our pitchdeck to Mehmet so that he could prepare the meeting. As soon as we began working with our coach, it was clear that he understood our industry inside and out. He provides quick tips and insights that can help us avoid common pitfalls and make the most of our strengths. His advice is helpful as we build our business plan and establish our market position.

Which important lessons did you learn from your collaboration?

Mehmet has extensive knowledge of aerospace components thanks to the startup he founded in the industry. Therefore, it was simple to describe the difficulties the sector is currently experiencing. With his prior experience, creating a business case was simpler.

What is the biggest benefit of having a coach?

A coach greatest strength is the ability to see things from a new perspective. He/She helps to challenge our limiting beliefs and see our situation in a different light, which can open up new possibilities and opportunities. Especially when a coach creates a safe and non-judgmental space, where we can openly share our thoughts and feelings without fear of being judged.
